61 Year-Old Cancer Survivor Sets Colorado Cycling Record

(Boulder,  Colorado) – Fred Boethling (age 61), a Boulder-based ultracyclist, set a Colorado North-South-North cycling speed record this past weekend.  He pedaled the 631.7 miles from the Wyoming/Colorado border to the New Mexico/Colorado border and back in 2 days 2 hours 35 minutes setting the 60+ age group record.

Starting Saturday morning, he rode the first leg from Wyoming to New Mexico in 23 hours 8 minutes through record heat, high winds, rain and finishing with the 2300 vertical foot climb of Raton Pass.  After sleeping for about 3 hours, a quick massage and breakfast-to-go, he began the ride back to Wyoming.  Despite a discouraging start to the day Boethling achieved a negative split time by riding the return route in just 22 hours 14 minutes, just shy of one hour faster than the initial leg of the ride.

The record is awaiting certification by the UltraMarathon Cycling Association (UMCA) – an international organization that oversees long-distance amateur cycling events.  A team of UMCA officials observed his ride to ensure that all traffic laws and cycling regulations were obeyed.

This was Fred's last big step in preparing for the June 2006 Race Across AMerica (RAAM),  where he will be the oldest solo competitor and attempt to be the oldest solo finisher ever.  RAAM has been called the world's toughest endurance athletic event by Outside Magazine.  In 2006 it crosses 13 states, starting in Oceanside, California on June 11 and ending in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Boethling, a cancer survivor, views cycling as great way to enjoy the outdoors and that age does not have to limit your ability to compete in endurance events at a high level.  He currently holds six other cross state cycling records and successfully completed RAAM as half of a 2-man team in 2005.  Fred would like to thank his sponsors Pearl Izumi and Barts CD Cellar for all their support in making these events possible.
